Garden for Community Cupboard Is Planted

Volunteers from Mountain View United Methodist Church, High View Baptist Church and The Harvest Center met tonight to launch the 2011 garden of raised beds located at MVUMC. The occasion was marked by our first experience of rain for two consecutive days in many months. Over the weekend a Stage 2 Fire Ban was issued, but our efforts were rewarded by a long soaking rain. We are off to an auspicious start!

Raised Beds and Planter Boxes

This workshop May 22, 2011 addressed building covered raised beds and planter boxes. We also suggested how to fill the boxes and what to plant in the beds, boxes and yard. Our panelists included Steve Field, Grace Harris, John Sherman and Lee Willoughby. All four of the presenters spoke about their successful experiences and things that didn't work well.

Steve also spoke about plant hardiness. The USDA zones are not what they seem at high altitude. But even more important is that hardiness at high altitudes is much more complex than what people in general think. He introduced to us the concept of summer hardiness.
