Veggie Tales Garden in Green Mountain Falls

Ellen, Lana, and Pat gathered at “Veggie Tales” garden today for Clara’s talk about tomatoes. Her “hands on” presentation included discussions of the types of tomatoes; soil and growing requirements; and, planting techniques.

Clara demonstrated the horizontal method: take off the lower 2-3 leaves; dig a trench; and, plant the tomato by laying it horizontal instead of the usual vertical position.

While Clara was planting the tomatoes, her daughter and a friend were painting black the milk jugs filled with water. The jugs were placed beside the tomatoes to provide a heat mass. After soaking up sun all day, the water jugs will provide warm, cozy heat in the raised bed at night.

Ellen’s raised bed is noteworthy for its combination of artistry, craftsmanship, and sound veggie selection.

Lana installed her tomato supports in anticipation of a great harvest.

We consider CGH&P and Veggie Tales to be sister gardens because they were both created in 2009 by like-minded people.
